The True Expense of Running Outdated Technology

The True Expense of Running Outdated Technology

There’s a lot of comfort to be found in familiarity. It’s why so many of us cling to the way we’ve always done things. It’s the root of the old adage, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” In many contexts, this can be very good advice. One place it isn’t: your business’ technology.

Neglecting to improve the technology your business relies on can itself incur significant inherent costs that aren’t immediately apparent. Let’s explore them to truly appreciate the benefits of keeping your business’ tech up to date.

How Can Older Tech Hold Your Business Back?

There are two primary ways: by reducing productivity and by increasing maintenance needs.

Reduced Productivity

At this point, we’ve all been spoiled by lightning-fast technology to the point where it would be infuriating to take a step back to how things once were. Can you imagine waiting for a dial-up connection to check your email, for example, or to lose that connection if someone were to pick up the phone? Newer, more modern technology is faster, and as such, allows us to accomplish more in the same amount of time or even less.

However, if we fail to keep up with changing technology, our business IT will inherently slow down, and not only by comparison. Older tech experiences more issues and needs to be fixed more often. As a result, downtime also increases whenever something requires an expensive repair.

Additionally, newer, better options aren’t designed to integrate with more antiquated solutions, making it more challenging for businesses to utilize valuable tools like the cloud, modern software, and new technologies. This means that relying on older tools can, quite literally, bar you from using newer tools at all.

Increased Maintenance

As we mentioned earlier, the older your technology becomes, the more difficult it is to keep it functioning properly. More issues will impact it as new threats are developed and the developers commit less and less time to protecting it. Plus, if something physically breaks, parts become harder and harder to find. Eventually, these parts will become cost-prohibitive to acquire.

You also need to consider the skills required to maintain older systems, as compared to newer ones. In many ways, the difference is like comparing apples to oranges. As time passes, fewer and fewer technicians will be familiar with the older, less optimal systems.

Finally, emergency calls are notoriously expensive, as they often require a rush and escalation. Keeping things maintained ahead of time is always the more cost-effective option. Relying on outdated technology, however, is the antithesis of that.

This all translates to increased costs to you.

Outdated Technology Also Opens You Up to Cybersecurity Issues

We can’t neglect to mention how failing to maintain and otherwise keep your business’ IT up-to-date leaves you vulnerable to various issues.

Cyber Vulnerability

Again, we already mentioned how developers tend to commit fewer and fewer resources to older IT tools. As a result, aging operating systems and applications lack the updated security features and software protections that need to be in place to prevent the modern threats you will face.

It’s like the old saying, you don’t bring a knife to a gunfight. Unfortunately, your old IT’s pocket knife isn’t going to help much against a cybercriminal’s digital six-shooter.

Plus, most compliance demands simply cannot be met with outdated tech, leaving a business that doesn’t maintain its technology in a tough spot. Unless you actively want to be fined or have your reputation tarnished, keeping up with modern technology is more and more necessary.

Disaster Recovery Hurdles

Of course, there’s also the fact that older hardware tends to fail more frequently, increasing the likelihood of data loss. Exacerbating this, this older hardware is often incompatible with newer, more modern backup solutions. This effectively makes meaningful disaster recovery preparations impossible.

These issues leave you less competitive, with a disengaged team and a suffering reputation. So, what can be done?
